Oil on linen and canvas, worked in glazed layers over several months. Each begins in a rehearsal room and is resolved slowly afterwards.
Large Side Reach 1, 2026 Oil on Belgian linen, 130 × 116 cm £6,500
A standing figure bent almost to a right angle at the waist, one arm carried up over the head and out past it, the feet crossed and flat on the floor. It is the largest painting in the series and the only one still on the ground, which makes it the one where the spine does all the work. Nothing here is airborne. The tension is being held rather than released.

The body folded in on itself at the top of a jump, in the half-second where the rising has stopped and the falling has not yet begun. Below it the ground is a dark curve at the very foot of the canvas, near enough to matter. The colour was arrived at in the room, with the dancer moving, rather than decided afterwards in the studio.

Drop Fold 2, 2026 Oil on Belgian linen, 110 × 81 cm

The deepest fold of the three: the body closed almost double, the hands reaching down to the ankle, the head lost behind the shoulder. The ground is a dark red and the space behind it very nearly black, so the figure is lit by nothing that is in the room with it. This one is about weight rather than flight.
These paintings belong to a single thread of enquiry, developed over several years of experiment. They are not everything I have made, and they are not meant to be.
